We’ve got a confession to make: even some of the Kurgo office dogs put on a few extra pounds from indulgent eating during the holiday season. The good news? New Year’s always brings a resurgence of healthy eating habits, and dogs can benefit from these changes too! A few years ago, when we were compiling our Holiday Cookbook for Dogs, we came across Melissa Gunderson of Proud Dog Mom (www.ProudDogMom.com). We were looking for healthy and easy dog recipes to share with our audience and we knew Melissa was someone we needed to include.
Melissa didn't always write dog recipes. She is a former television news reporter and blogger who also loves dogs. After four years of covering local news in stations stretching from snowy
Pennsylvania to sunny Texas, she redirected her curious nature to the dogs. She
had been a responsible Poodle breeder for several years and she developed a close
network of top groomers, trainers, vets, dog product developers, and more.
Along with offering useful tips to better care for your dog, Melissa has partnered with her mother (a registered nurse and home chef) to create original, good-for-your-dog treat recipes. Together, they released their first dog treat cookbook titled, "Proud Dog Chef: Tail-Wagging Good Treat Recipes" -- available at online bookstores, such as Amazon and Barnes & Nobles. When she isn't blogging, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two dogs -- a five-year-old Chihuahua, Diego, and a three-year-old toy Poodle, Gigi.
We recently reconnected with her and she shared 4 DIY healthy dog treat recipes that even the most novice chef can handle. They contain ingredients that will benefit your dog and are quick to prepare. We’ve provided the links below and you can go right to her site for all the step-by-step tutorials.
1. Banana Bread Soft Chew Dog Treats
These soft treats are great for a puppy or a senior dog, or any dog at all! They have a cake-like consistency and they're grain-free too!
2. Mini Turkey Loaf Muffins
These treats contain just five ingredients and are gluten-free and grain-free. Like almost all of Melissa's recipes, they are super quick to make!
3. Fish Paws
The main ingredient is a can of sardines! Dogs love this treat, and sardines are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.
4. Nutty Dog Biscuits
Once baked, these treats have a very crunchy texture which dogs love. Made with almond and coconut flavor, these grain-free biscuits are one of Melissa's go-to dog snacks!
Proud Dog Chef: Tail Wagging Good Treat Recipes would make a perfect addition to any dog owner’s cookbook collection.
