Outdoor Retailers Succeed in Pet Category

The Outdoor Industry can Benefit from the Success of the Pet Industry

-Four-year recipient of the Inc. 500 | 5000 Fastest Growing Businesses in America Award, pet outdoor product manufacturer Kurgo, announces high hopes for the outdoor industry with bigger presence of pet products.-

(Salisbury, MA) – It’s no surprise that pets are a huge part of our lives, but it may be a surprise to some to know that the pet industry is a $55 billion industry, with an expected growth of over $2.7 billion in 2014 to a notable $58.51, according to the American Pet Products Association.

“Not many industries are experiencing this type of growth,” said Kurgo President Gordie Spater. “We’re talking about another five percent growth in an industry that is already among the top for consumer goods; even the consumer electronics industry is only expected to increase two percent in 2014.”

Currently in the United States, there are 82.5 million pet-owning households. That means nearly three quarters of our population owns pets. In addition, Americans are increasingly bringing their dogs along on their outdoor adventures. In a Kurgo demographic survey, we found that 38% of our customers run with their dog at least monthly while 43% hike with their dog at least monthly. 81% of Kurgo customers travel overnight with their dog.

Since bringing in new customers has time and time again proven to be more difficult than increasing sales among current customers, outdoor retailers can capitalize on their current customer base by selling them a new category: an effective way to grow sales.

“We know that these customers have pets, and having products that relate to both their pets and their active lifestyle is just another way for outdoor retailers to get more sales from the customers they already have,” adds Spater.

Kurgo®, the leading manufacturer of pet outdoor, travel and safety products, will make their summer show debut at one of the biggest outdoor trade shows in the United States: Outdoor Retailer Summit August 6-9 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Among the hundreds of booths showcasing coats, shoes, hiking, running, biking gear for people, Kurgo will be at booth PV3091 (the Pavilions) showing off the latest in outdoor gear for pets, including LED light up dog shoes for hiking and running, active harnesses, reflective vests, toys, and automobile safety products for dogs. They will also be hosting a seminar at their booth on the second day of the show, Thursday the 7th at 3 p.m. to help outdoor retailers learn how to maximize sales to active pet owners.

“We want retailers to know there’s a huge opportunity they’re missing out on if they’re not selling the pet category in their stores,” said Spater. “We’re going to address everything from reservations with including a new category, to which products are right for their customers and ultimately how to sell pet products effectively.”
